Piazzale Michelangelo & San Miniato

Piazzale Michelangelo

The Piazzale Michelangelo is Florence's most famous viewpoint — and one of the world's legendary panoramic spots. From the terrace on the hill south of the Arno, you overlook the entire skyline: the Duomo with Brunelleschi's dome, the tower of Palazzo Vecchio, the Ponte Vecchio, Santa Croce, and beyond, the hills of Fiesole. In the center: a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David.

The sunset from here is a must-see: The light bathes the city in gold and red, the dome glows, the bridges reflect in the Arno. Bring a bottle of Chianti, sit on the steps, and enjoy the spectacle. It's free, and no photo does the original justice.

Getting there: Bus 12 or 13 from Piazza San Niccolò (5 minutes). Or on foot: The steps from Piazza Giuseppe Poggi are steep, but the climb is part of the experience (15–20 minutes from Ponte alle Grazie).

Basilica di San Miniato al Monte

Another 50 steps higher than Piazzale Michelangelo lies the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte — one of Italy's most beautiful Romanesque churches (1018–1207). The facade of green and white marble gleams in the sunlight, the interior is of timeless simplicity: geometric patterns, a raised choir, a medieval mosaic with Christ Pantocrator. In the adjoining monastery, Olivetan monks produce honey, liqueurs, and herbal teas, which you can buy in the monastery shop. At 5:30 PM: Gregorian Vespers — an unforgettable sound experience. Admission: free.
