Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)

★★★ Kazbegi — Georgia's Most Iconic Panorama

The mountain town of Stepantsminda (mostly known by its old name Kazbegi) is located at 1,740 m at the foot of Mount Kazbek (5,047 m)—Georgia's third-highest mountain and one of the most striking peaks of the entire Caucasus. Mount Kazbek is an extinct stratovolcano, which according to Greek mythology is the place where Prometheus was chained to the rock.

The real star is the Gergeti Trinity Church (Zminda Sameba), perched on a hill at 2,170 m—with the snow-capped Kazbek as a backdrop. This image is THE postcard motif of Georgia and one of the most iconic images of the entire Caucasus.

★★★ Gergeti Trinity Church (Zminda Sameba)

The church from the 14th century was deliberately built in such an inaccessible place—as a refuge for holy relics in times of invasion. The bell tower next to it dates from the same period. Inside: simple fresco remnants and an atmosphere of absolute silence.

The ascent on foot takes about 1.5 hours (3 km, 400 meters elevation gain). The path is steep but well marked. Alternatively: 4x4 vehicles drive up from Stepantsminda (20–30 GEL per person, 15 min.).

Tip: Go at sunrise or late afternoon—then the light is most beautiful and the tourist groups are gone. On clear days, Mount Kazbek is visible in full splendor.

What else to do in Kazbegi

  • Kazbek Base Camp (Glacier Hike): For fit hikers—a day hike (6–8h round trip) to the Gergeti Glacier at about 3,600 m. No technical climbing, but fitness and good footwear required. Fantastic high mountain landscape.
  • Truso Valley: A spectacular hike through a remote valley with mineral springs, abandoned villages, and travertine terraces. Half-day, moderate difficulty.
  • Juta Valley: Small mountain village (2,200 m) with access to alpine meadows, glacier lakes, and the Chaukhi Massif (Georgian "Dolomites"). Camping and trekking.

Getting There

Kazbegi is the easiest Caucasus access from Tbilisi:

  • Marshrutka: From Didube bus station, daily 8:00–17:00, about every 2h. 3 hours, 10 GEL.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer: About 100–150 GEL (30–45€) from Tbilisi. Advantage: Plan stops on the Military Highway.
  • Rental Car: Easily doable—the Georgian Military Highway is paved and well passable (except in winter).

💡 Tipp

Spend at least one night in Kazbegi. The Gergeti Church at sunrise, when mist drifts through the valley and Mount Kazbek glows golden, is an unforgettable experience. Rooms Hotel Kazbegi has the best terrace—but the guesthouses in the village also offer fantastic views.
