Svaneti (Mestia & Ushguli)

★★★ Svaneti — Georgia's Enchanted Mountain Land

Svaneti (Svaneti) is the wildest and most remote area of Georgia—and one of Europe's most spectacular mountain travel destinations. Enclosed between the highest peaks of the Caucasus (Shkhara at 5,193 m is Georgia's highest mountain), the Svans have preserved their own culture, language, and traditions over centuries. Their medieval defensive towers (Koshki), which tower over the sky in every village, are the symbol of the region and part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

★★★ Mestia — The Capital of Svaneti

The main town (2,200 inhabitants, 1,500 m) is the starting point for all Svaneti adventures. Around the town stand dozens of defensive towers, behind which glaciers and four-thousand-meter peaks rise. In recent years, Mestia has developed: There are guesthouses, restaurants, an excellent Svaneti Historical Museum (with medieval icons, goldsmith works, and the history of blood feuds), and even a small airport (flights from Tbilisi, spectacular landing between the mountains).

★★★ Ushguli — Europe's Highest Permanent Settlement

The village of Ushguli at 2,200 m is the jewel of Svaneti: a collection of medieval stone houses and defensive towers that have remained almost unchanged for centuries. In the background: the Shkhara Glacier and Georgia's highest mountain. Ushguli is UNESCO World Heritage and one of the most remote inhabited places in Europe—often cut off from the outside world for months in winter.

The drive from Mestia to Ushguli (45 km) takes 2–3 hours over an adventurous gravel road, only passable with 4x4. Alternatively: the four-day Mestia–Ushguli Trek through valleys, over passes, and past glaciers—one of the best treks in the Caucasus.

Hiking in Svaneti

• Mestia → Ushguli Trek (4 days): The royal tour. Through the valleys of Mestia over the Latpari Pass to Ushguli. Overnight in guesthouses in the villages. Moderate difficulty, no technical equipment needed. Best time: July–September.
• Koruldi Lakes (Day Tour from Mestia): Ascent to the glacier lakes at 2,740 m with panoramic views of the Ushba (4,710 m), the "Matterhorn of the Caucasus." 6–7 hours, strenuous but rewarding.
• Chalaadi Glacier (Half-day from Mestia): Easy hike (3–4h) along a river to the glacier gate. Spectacular and family-friendly.

Getting to Svaneti

• Marshrutka from Kutaisi: Daily, 5–6h, 20 GEL. Over the winding pass road—a ride for strong nerves.
• Marshrutka from Tbilisi: Via Kutaisi, 8–10h total.
• Airplane: Vanilla Sky flies from Tbilisi to Mestia (1h, about 60 GEL). Only in good weather—flights are often canceled. The landing between the mountains is an experience.
• Rental Car: SUV/4x4 recommended. Easily doable from Kutaisi, road now largely paved to Mestia.
