Discover the Cyclades
The Cyclades (Greek: Κυκλάδες, "the Circular Ones") are what most people think of when they hear "Greece": whitewashed cube houses with blue shutters, narrow alleys full of bougainvillea, wind-swept chapels on cliffs, and sunsets that turn the sea into liquid gold. 24 inhabited islands (and dozens of uninhabited ones) form a loose circle around the sacred island of Delos — hence the name.
Each Cycladic island has its own character, and that's what makes island hopping here so addictive:
- Santorini — The Icon. Caldera panorama, luxury hotels, volcanic vineyards
- Mykonos — Party, Glamour & the sacred island of Delos on the doorstep
- Naxos — The All-rounder: Endless beaches, green hinterland, family-friendly
- Paros — Relaxed charm between fishing ports and windsurfer beaches
- Milos — The new star: 70+ surreal beaches, lunar landscapes, boat adventures
- Tinos — Pilgrimage site & foodie island (Greece's best village cuisine)
- Syros — The capital of the Cyclades: Hermoupolis has more Venice than Mykonos
- Folegandros, Sifnos, Amorgos — For connoisseurs who want to escape the crowds
Island Hopping Logistics
The Cyclades are Greece's best-connected island group. Ferries depart daily from Piraeus (Athens) and Rafina, and in summer, also high-speed ferries and catamarans. The main connections:
- Piraeus → Santorini: Ferry 8h (from €35), high-speed ferry 5h (from €55)
- Piraeus → Mykonos: Ferry 5.5h (from €30), high-speed ferry 3h (from €45)
- Piraeus → Naxos: Ferry 5.5h (from €28), high-speed ferry 3.5h (from €42)
- Piraeus → Milos: Ferry 7h (from €32), high-speed ferry 3.5h (from €50)
- Between the islands: 30 min. to 4 hrs., from €10 (local ferries)
Book ferries: Via Ferryhopper.com or DirectFerries.com — both show all ferry companies (Blue Star, SeaJets, Minoan, Hellenic Seaways, Fast Ferries). In high season (July/August), book 2–4 weeks in advance, especially for cars. Foot passengers almost always get tickets, but seats on high-speed ferries can sell out.
Flights: Santorini (JTR) and Mykonos (JMK) have international airports with direct flights from Germany (Eurowings, Condor, Ryanair). Naxos and Paros have small airports with connections to Athens (Olympic Air, from €50 one-way). Milos has a tiny airport with 2–3 Athens flights daily.

💡 Tipp
No more than 3–4 islands in 2 weeks — otherwise, you'll spend more time on ferries than on the beach. A good rhythm: 3 nights per island minimum. Golden rule: One "big" island (Santorini/Mykonos) + 2 quieter ones (e.g., Naxos + Milos). The best travel time: Mid-May to mid-June and September — perfect weather, prices 30–50% below high season, no crowds.
