Beaches

The Peloponnese has some of the most beautiful and emptiest beaches in Greece — without the crowds of Crete or the Cyclades. While the islands market their beaches with #beach on Instagram, the Peloponnese has dream beaches that are not overcrowded even in August. Here are the best:

Voidokilia★★★

Voidokilia (Βοϊδοκοιλιά) is THE beach of the Peloponnese — and one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and the entire Mediterranean. A perfect semicircle of the finest golden sand frames a turquoise-blue, shallow lagoon. From above (from the old fortress Palaiokastro), Voidokilia looks like an Omega symbol (Ω) — an instantly recognizable image.

The water is shallow, warm, and crystal clear — perfect for families and swimmers. The sand is as fine as flour. And the best part: Voidokilia is located in a nature reserve (Natura 2000), so there are no hotels, no beach bars, no loungers. Just sand, sea, and nature. Bring everything (water, snacks, sun protection, garbage bags!).

Behind the beach lies the Gialova Lagoon — an important wetland home to flamingos, herons, and over 250 bird species. And on the hill above the beach, the ruins of the fortress Palaiokastro (also "Nestor's Cave") — a 15-minute climb for one of the best beach panoramic views in Europe.

Access: 10 km west of Pylos, unpaved access road (last kilometer gravel, but doable with a rental car). No shade on the beach — bring an umbrella! Parking at the end of the track. May–October. In July/August, come early in the morning.

💡 Tipp

The climb to the old fortress Palaiokastro is doubly rewarding: first, the iconic view of the perfect semicircle from above (THE photo!), and second, halfway up, you'll find the "Cave of Nestor" (Spilia tou Nestora) — a stalactite cave where, according to legend, King Nestor hid his cattle.

Simos Beach (Elafonisos)★★★

Simos Beach on the small island of Elafonisos (Ελαφόνησος) — this is the Caribbean in the middle of Greece. Fine white sand, turquoise-blue water that glows in the sun, and sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara. Simos is actually a double beach: the main beach (Megali Simos, organized with loungers from 10€/set) and the wilder small beach (Mikri Simos, unspoiled).

Elafonisos can be reached by ferry from the port of Pounta at the southern tip of Laconia (10 min. crossing, approx. 4€ per person, 12€ per car, half-hourly). The island is tiny (19 km²) — basically a beach with a village. In August, however, Simos is full — the Greeks know their jewel well. In the off-season (May, June, September), you have it almost to yourself.

Tip: Stay overnight on the island (small guesthouses from 50€) instead of a day trip — the beach in the early morning and at sunset is magical.

Foneas Beach (Mani)

Foneas Beach is the wildest and most dramatic beach in Mani — wedged between rugged rocks, with crystal-clear water and an atmosphere reminiscent of a lost pirate bay. The access via a steep staircase makes it less crowded than other Mani beaches.

The pebble beach is small (about 100 m), the water deep and blue, the rock formations around it spectacular. Ideal for snorkeling — the rocks underwater are full of sea urchins, small fish, and octopuses. In high summer, there is a mobile canteen stand with cold drinks, but do not rely on it. Bring everything.

Access: On the coastal road between Areopoli and Gerolimenas, well signposted. Parking at the top, then stairs down (5 min.). No shade — use an umbrella or the rocks as natural shade.

Costa Navarino

Costa Navarino is the luxury hotspot of the Peloponnese — a resort area opened in 2010 on the coast of Messenia, 10 km south of Pylos. Here, the Marriott group and the Greek investor TEMES have created a resort concept that combines luxury with sustainability: two 5-star hotels (The Westin Resort and The Romanos), two golf courses (signature design by Bernhard Langer and Robert Trent Jones Jr.), thalasso spa, and an olive grove with 4,500 trees.

The beach of Costa Navarino is dreamy: fine golden sand, shallow water, and the entire infrastructure of a luxury resort (loungers, bars, water sports). But you don't have to be a resort guest — the beach is publicly accessible.

Costa Navarino is not cheap (double room from 250€/night at the Westin), but for a 5-star experience on the Peloponnese, it's the first address. Especially for golfers and families who want to combine beach luxury with cultural excursions (Olympia 1.5 hrs, Mystras 2 hrs, Mycenae 2.5 hrs).

Other Beaches

The Peloponnese has dozens of other excellent beaches — here is a selection:

  • Mavrovouni Beach (Gytheio) — 5 km long sandy beach, ideal for walking, campsites right by the sea. Sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nest in the dunes. Gytheio itself is a pretty harbor town with good fish taverns.
  • Kalogria Beach (Achaia) — Endless sandy beach in a pine grove on the Gulf of Patras. Quiet, shady, family-friendly. Near the Strofilia Forest (unique stone pine forest).
  • Tolo Beach (Argolis) — Organized sandy beach, 12 km from Nafplio. Popular with families, shallow water, many taverns. In August, Greek mass tourism.
  • Porto Kagio (Mani) — Secluded pebble bay on the east coast of Mani, almost at Cape Tenaro. Crystal-clear water, one tavern, nothing else. Paradise for those seeking peace.
  • Koroni Beach (Messenia) — Long sandy beach below the Venetian fortress of Koroni. The fortress itself (with a nunnery and gardens) is worth a visit.
