Trains & BritRail
The British rail system is one of the oldest in the world (since 1830!) and one of the — let's say — "most characterful". It is fast, connects all major cities, and offers fantastic scenic views. But: It is also expensive, confusingly organized (dozens of rail companies), and not always punctual. Still: For travel without a car, the train is the best option.

BritRail Pass
The BritRail Pass — exclusively for non-British travelers — offers unlimited travel across the entire network. Must be purchased online BEFORE departure (britRail.com).
| Pass | Price (Adult, 2nd class) |
|---|---|
| 4 days in 1 month | approx. £210 |
| 8 days in 1 month | approx. £300 |
| 15 consecutive days | approx. £390 |
| 1 month consecutive | approx. £520 |
Worth it from 3–4 longer journeys. Advance tickets (fixed train, not flexible, book weeks in advance) are often cheaper than the pass — do the math!
Booking tips: Book tickets on nationalrail.co.uk or the Trainline app. Advance tickets (fixed train) are the cheapest, but non-refundable. Off-Peak tickets (outside peak times) are more flexible and slightly more expensive. Anytime tickets (any train) are the most expensive — often absurdly so. Tip: Split Ticketing — sometimes it's cheaper to buy two tickets (London → Didcot + Didcot → Bath) instead of one (London → Bath). Tools like Trainsplit.com calculate this automatically.
💡 Tipp
The most beautiful train route in Great Britain: Edinburgh → Fort William → Mallaig (the "West Highland Line"). 5.5 hours through the Scottish Highlands — lochs, moors, the Glenfinnan Viaduct (famous from Harry Potter!), and at the end, the coast. Reserve a window seat on the left! Second most beautiful: Settle-Carlisle Line through the Yorkshire Dales.
