Entry & Visa (Post-Brexit)
Since Brexit (January 1, 2021), new entry rules apply for EU citizens:
Important Rules
- No visa required! EU citizens, Swiss, and EEA citizens can enter as tourists for up to 6 months — without a visa. This is more generous than the Schengen Area (90 days)
- Passport recommended: Since October 2021, ID cards are no longer accepted — you need a valid passport! Exception: Those with EU Settlement Status can enter with an ID card until 2025
- eGates: EU citizens aged 12 and over can use the automatic passport control gates (eGates) at most airports — faster than manual control
- ETA (from 2025): The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA, similar to the US ESTA) will be gradually introduced for EU citizens from 2025 — apply online before traveling, small fee. As of 2026: Check the current rules on gov.uk
- No right to work: As a tourist, you are not allowed to work. For work, study, or longer stays, you need a visa
Achtung
Since Brexit: ID card is NO longer sufficient! You need a valid passport to enter Great Britain. Check the expiration date in advance — the passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay.
