Mentawai Islands — World-class surfing★★
The Mentawai Islands are located 150 kilometers off the west coast of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean—and are one of the top 5 surf destinations in the world. What makes the islands so special: The swells of the Indian Ocean hit hundreds of reefs here, creating perfect, machine-like consistent waves in all sizes and difficulty levels.
The most famous breaks
- Lance's Right (HTs): One of the most perfect right-handers in the world—long, hollow barrels over sharp reef. For advanced surfers.
- Macaronis: Fast, fun left wave—considered one of the most fun waves in the world. Ideal for intermediate to advanced.
- Telescopes: Powerful left wave with massive barrels. For experienced surfers.
- Lance's Left (Lances): The perfect left barrel—cover shot material.
How to get there?
Most surfers book a surf charter (liveaboard boat) from Padang—10–14 days, from about €1,500 per person including accommodation, meals, and boat trips to the breaks. Cheaper alternative: Ferry from Padang to Tuapejat (10–12 hours, from 150,000 IDR / €9) and then surf camp on the islands.
The best surf time is April to October, when the southwest monsoon delivers consistent swells. Wave heights vary from 3 to 12+ feet. Warm water (28°C), no wetsuits needed—just reef booties against the sharp reefs.
Apart from surfing, the Mentawai Islands are home to the Mentawai ethnic group, one of the most isolated peoples in Indonesia. Their traditional way of life with tattoos, loincloths, and shamanism survives in some villages—respectful visits are possible through local guides.
💡 Tipp
Mentawai is not a place for beginners: Most breaks are over sharp reefs, and the nearest medical care is far away. Intermediates (at least 2–3 years of experience, comfortable in overhead waves) will find many accessible spots. Reef booties, helmet, and a first aid kit are mandatory.
