Hermanus — Whale Capital of the World
Hermanus is one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching. From June to November, Southern Right Whales migrate to the protected Walker Bay to give birth to their calves — often coming as close as 20 meters to the shore. Hermanus even has an official Whale Crier, who roams the streets with a kelp horn announcing the locations of the whales.
Experiencing Whales
- Cliff Path — A 12-kilometer cliff path along the coast where you can watch whales directly below you. Free and breathtaking — bring binoculars.
- Boat Tours — For closer encounters: licensed boats are allowed to approach up to 50 meters from the whales. Approximately 1,200 ZAR (60€) per person for 2 hours. Almost guaranteed sightings between August and October.
- Hermanus Whale Festival — Every year at the end of September/beginning of October, Hermanus hosts a multi-day festival in honor of the whales: music, markets, lectures, and of course, whale watching.
Beyond the Whales
Hermanus is enchanting even without whales: excellent restaurants, a growing wine scene (Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with world-class Pinot Noir), hiking trails in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, and shark diving in the open ocean. The Stony Point Penguin Colony at Betty's Bay (30 minutes away) is a quieter alternative to Boulders Beach.
💡 Tipp
The best whale watching in Hermanus is in September and October — the bay is then full of mothers with calves, often playing and jumping right in front of the cliffs. Come early in the morning (before 9 AM) when the sea is calm — that's when you can see the whales best.
