Overberg & Whale Coast

The Overberg region (literally: "over the mountain") begins behind Sir Lowry's Pass east of Cape Town and stretches to the Garden Route. The landscape transitions from the vineyards of the Winelands to gentle wheat fields, wild coasts, and fynbos-covered mountains — one of the most beautiful and least visited regions of the Western Cape.

Highlights of the Overberg Region

  • Clarence Drive — The coastal road between Gordon's Bay and Kleinmond is considered one of the most beautiful scenic routes in South Africa. Dramatic cliffs, turquoise sea, and in winter, whales visible directly from the road.
  • Harold Porter National Botanical Garden (Betty's Bay) — A hidden gem: a botanical garden at the foot of the Kogelberg Mountains, with a waterfall and fynbos trails. Much quieter than Kirstenbosch.
  • Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve — The heart of the Cape Floristic Kingdom: the most species-rich region in the world per square kilometer. Hiking trails through pristine fynbos, kayaking tours on the Palmiet River.
  • Elgin Valley — South Africa's apple region and emerging wine region, known for cool, elegant Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs. Fewer tourists, more authentic than Stellenbosch.
