Stellenbosch — Cape Town's Wine Capital
Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa (founded in 1679) and the heart of the South African wine industry. The university town enchants with its shady oak-lined avenues (hence the nickname "Eikestad" — Oak City), the whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings, a vibrant student culture, and over 200 wineries within a 20-kilometer radius.

Stellenbosch Town
Even without wine tasting, a stroll through the town is worthwhile: the Village Museum (four historic houses from different eras), the Dorp Street with the longest row of Cape Dutch buildings, art galleries on Church Street, and numerous restaurants and cafes. The student pubs along Bird Street create an atmosphere — Stellenbosch has surprisingly vibrant nightlife for a small town.
💡 Tipp
Book a guided wine tour with a driver (from 800 ZAR / 40€ per person for half a day). You will visit 3–4 wineries, taste 15–20 wines, and not have to worry about the legal alcohol limit and driving on the left. The guides know the best hidden wineries off the tourist routes.
