Silicon Savannah — Kenya's Tech Revolution
In the past two decades, Kenya has developed into Africa's tech capital. Nairobi is the "Silicon Savannah" — a thriving ecosystem of start-ups, tech hubs, and digital innovations that is transforming the continent.
M-Pesa — The Mobile Payment Revolution
The most important Kenyan innovation: M-Pesa was introduced in 2007 by Safaricom (Kenya's largest mobile operator) and enables money transfers via mobile phone — without a bank account. Today, over 50 million people in 7 countries use M-Pesa. In Kenya, you can literally pay for everything with it: from taxi drivers to the vegetable market to the electricity bill. Cash is becoming increasingly obsolete.
M-Pesa has given millions of people without bank accounts access to the financial system and is a model for mobile financial services worldwide.
iHub & Start-up Scene
Nairobi's iHub (founded in 2010) was Africa's first tech hub and has spawned hundreds of start-ups. Today, there are dozens of co-working spaces, accelerators, and tech events. Major tech companies (Google, Microsoft, IBM) have their Africa headquarters in Nairobi.
