Caño Cristales — The Rainbow River
★★★ Caño Cristales — The Most Beautiful River in the World
Caño Cristales is often referred to as the "River of Five Colors" or the "Rainbow River" — and when you see it, you'll understand why. Between June and November, this river in the Serranía de la Macarena transforms into a psychedelic natural spectacle: Red, yellow, green, blue, and black shine from the crystal-clear water.
The colors come from Macarenia clavígera, an aquatic plant growing on the riverbed that changes color between the rainy and dry seasons. With optimal water levels (not too high, not too low) and sunlight, the incredible color spectacle emerges.
Practical Info
- Season: Accessible only June to November. In the dry season (Dec–May), the river is closed, and the plants regenerate. Peak: September to November (most intense colors).
- Getting there: Flight from Bogotá to La Macarena (1.5h, Satena or EasyFly, 250,000–400,000 COP / 60–95€ one-way). No road!
- Tours: Visits are only possible with a licensed guide. 2–3 day packages from 600,000–1,200,000 COP (140–280€) including flight, guide, accommodation, meals. Book through agencies in Bogotá or La Macarena.
- Rules: No sunscreen in the water (damages the plants), no shoes in the river, only on marked paths. The rules are strictly enforced — and that's a good thing.
The visit is logistically a bit demanding, but absolutely unique. There is no other place like this on Earth.
