Tatacoa Desert

★★ Desierto de la Tatacoa

The Tatacoa Desert is not a true desert but a tropical dry forest — yet the surreal landscape of ochre and gray rock formations, cacti, and deep erosion gorges feels like landing on Mars. Spanning 330 km², it consists of two areas:

  • El Cuzco (red zone): Spectacular orange-red rock labyrinths shaped by wind and water over millennia. Hikes through narrow gorges, photogenic formations, surreal light at sunrise and sunset.
  • Los Hoyos (gray zone): Gray-white rock landscape reminiscent of a lunar surface. Less visited but equally impressive.

★★★ Starry Sky

The Tatacoa Desert offers the clearest starry sky in Colombia. Far from any major city, with extremely low light pollution, the night sky here is overwhelming. An observatory (Observatorio Astronómico de la Tatacoa) offers telescope observations (20,000 COP / 5€, from 19:00) — Milky Way, Saturn's rings, and nebulae with the naked eye and through the telescope.

Practical Info

The Tatacoa is located near the town of Villavieja, 45 km north of Neiva (Department Huila). Getting there: Bus Bogotá → Neiva (5–6h, 40,000 COP / 10€), then Collectivo to Villavieja (30 min, 5,000 COP). In the desert, there are simple accommodations (hostels, campsites, from 30,000 COP / 7€) and a few restaurants.

The best time to visit: Dry season (Jun–Sep and Dec–Feb). Heat is extreme (up to 42°C!) — hikes early in the morning or late afternoon, spend midday heat in the pool. Stay at least one night for the starry sky.

💡 Tipp

Rent a Moto (motorcycle) in Villavieja (40,000 COP / 10€ per day) — it's the best way to explore the desert. The distances between zones are too large to walk, and there are hardly any taxis. Helmets are provided, and driver's licenses are rarely checked.
