Comuna 13 & Urban Culture

★★★ Comuna 13 (San Javier)

The Comuna 13 is Medellín's most impressive experience and a symbol of the city's transformation. In the 1990s and early 2000s, this hillside neighborhood was a battleground — controlled by guerrillas, paramilitaries, and drug cartels. In 2002, the controversial "Operación Orión" began, a military action that left severe human rights violations.

Today, Comuna 13 is a vibrant open-air gallery. The residents have reclaimed their neighborhood with art: huge graffiti murals tell stories of violence, displacement, hope, and new beginnings. Outdoor escalators (installed in 2011) connect the steep slopes and are unique worldwide as public infrastructure. Hip-hop dancers perform at the stairs, souvenir vendors sell local art, and the view over the city is breathtaking.

Graffiti Tour: A Must

Take a guided tour with a local guide — many guides grew up in the Comuna themselves and tell the neighborhood's story firsthand. The tours last 2–3 hours, cost 30,000–60,000 COP (7–14€), and are absolutely worth the money. Without a guide, you miss the stories behind the images.

★★★ Museo de Antioquia & Plaza Botero

In the city center stands the Plaza Botero — a square full of oversized bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero: chubby women, chubby men, chubby horses, chubby cats. 23 sculptures that Botero donated to his hometown, freely accessible and a delightful photo opportunity. Right next to it is the Museo de Antioquia with Botero's paintings and Colombian art (14,000 COP / 3€).

★★ Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico)

A green oasis in the middle of the city. The Orquideorama — an iconic wooden structure in the shape of a flower — houses an orchid collection. Butterflies, tropical birds, and a lake with turtles make the garden the perfect place for a break. Free entry!

★★ Metrocable to Santo Domingo

The cable cars (Metrocable) are not only a means of transport but also an experience and attraction in themselves. Line K to Santo Domingo offers spectacular views over the hillside slums — an impressive image of Medellín's social reality. From Santo Domingo, continue by gondola to Parque Arví, a nature park in the cloud forest (hiking, butterflies, fresh mountain air).

💡 Tipp

Visit Comuna 13 on weekday mornings — it can get very crowded on weekends. And importantly: Photograph the residents only with their consent. Buy art and souvenirs directly from local artists — the money stays in the neighborhood.
