Discover Medellín
Medellín is Colombia's feel-good city. Located in a tropical valley at 1,495 meters, the "City of Eternal Spring" enjoys spring-like temperatures between 22 and 28°C year-round. No winter, no summer — just perfect climate. Add to that the friendliest people in Colombia (the Paisas), a vibrant cultural scene, and a success story like no other.
The history of Medellín is also its greatest lesson: In the 1990s, the city under Pablo Escobar was the most dangerous in the world — 381 murders per 100,000 inhabitants (1991). Today, the rate is below 20, and Medellín was named the "most innovative city in the world" in 2013. Escalators in slums, gondolas as public transport, parks instead of slums — the city has literally reinvented itself.
For travelers, Medellín offers a perfect mix: urban culture (Comuna 13, museums, nightlife), spectacular surroundings (Guatapé, Santa Fe de Antioquia), and the coffee zone as a day trip or multi-day excursion. Plan at least 3–4 days.
Orientation
Medellín stretches along the Río Medellín in a north-south valley:
- El Poblado: The tourist epicenter in the south. Parque Lleras with bars and restaurants, hostels, and boutique hotels. Safe, green, but somewhat of a "Gringo bubble".
- Laureles / Estadio: More authentic than El Poblado, popular with long-term travelers and digital nomads. Good restaurants, quieter, more locals. The football stadium is located here.
- Centro: The chaotic, bustling city center. Museo de Antioquia, Plaza Botero, affordable shopping. Exciting during the day, best avoided at night.
- Comuna 13: The former problem area in the west, now an open-air gallery with escalators, graffiti, and hip-hop. A must!
- Santo Domingo / Parque Arví: On the northern hillside. Accessible by Metrocable, offering the Arví Nature Park (hiking in the cloud forest).
💡 Tipp
Medellín's Metro is clean, safe, and the easiest way to explore the city. A single ride costs 2,950 COP (0.70€), the Cívica card (rechargeable) saves time. The Metrocable gondolas are included in the Metro fare!
