Pacific Coast & Chocó

★★★ Chocó — Colombia's Wild West

The Department of Chocó on the Pacific coast is one of the rainiest areas on Earth and at the same time one of the most biodiverse. Here, the tropical rainforest meets the ocean — a landscape of almost unreal beauty and authenticity. There are no roads, no hotel chains, no mass tourism. The only connection to the outside world: propeller planes and boats.

The region is predominantly inhabited by Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities (Emberá). It is one of Colombia's poorest departments but has a cultural richness that is unparalleled: marimba music, currulao dance, and a cuisine based on coconut milk, fish, and plantain.

★★★ Whale Watching (July–October)

Every year between July and October, thousands of humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to Colombia to give birth to their calves in the warm waters of the Pacific. Colombia's Pacific coast offers one of the best whale-watching opportunities worldwide — in some weeks, you can see the whales directly from the beach.

The best places:

  • Nuquí: Small fishing village with a handful of eco-lodges. Humpback whales appear right off the coast, breaching and slapping their fins. Boat tours (80,000–120,000 COP / 20–30€) get astonishingly close to the whales.
  • Bahía Solano: Slightly larger than Nuquí, with a better airport. Similarly good whale watching, plus diving and snorkeling. Playa El Almejal beach is one of the most beautiful on the Pacific.
  • El Valle (near Bahía Solano): It's a 20-minute walk from the village to the beach, where sea turtles also lay their eggs between July and October.

Practical Info Chocó

Arrival is only possible by plane: Satena flies from Medellín to Nuquí and Bahía Solano (45–60 min., 200,000–350,000 COP / 50–85€ one-way). Flights are often fully booked — book weeks in advance! There is no ATM in Nuquí (there is one in Bahía Solano) — bring enough cash.

Accommodations are simple eco-lodges, often with full board (as there are hardly any restaurants). Budget: 150,000–350,000 COP (35–85€) per person/night including meals. The luxury here is not the hotel, but the nature: jungle hikes, snorkeling with turtles, thermal baths in the jungle (Termales de Joví near Nuquí), whale watching, and absolute silence.

💡 Tipp

Book an eco-lodge with full board and an organized program (e.g., El Cantil in Nuquí or Playa de Oro Lodge). The lodge organizes everything: airport transfer, boat tours, whale watching, jungle hikes. The region is difficult to travel on your own.
