San Andrés & Providencia

★★★ San Andrés — Colombia's Caribbean Island

San Andrés is located 775 km off the Colombian coast and only 240 km from Nicaragua — geologically and culturally closer to Central America than to Colombia. The island is famous for its "Sea of Seven Colors" (Mar de los Siete Colores): The water shimmers in all shades of blue, turquoise, and green over the world's third-largest barrier reef.

The Raizal population — descendants of English settlers and African slaves — speaks San Andrés Creole (an English-based Creole language) and maintains a unique culture that is distinctly different from the Colombian mainland. Reggae sounds instead of Cumbia, coconut milk dishes instead of Bandeja Paisa.

What to Do on San Andrés

  • Johnny Cay: Tiny island 20 minutes by boat to the north. Dream beach with palm trees like out of a picture book. Day trip (50,000–80,000 COP / 12–20€ including boat ride). Crowded on weekends.
  • Aquarium & Haynes Cay: Snorkeling paradise in shallow, crystal-clear water. Rays, sharks (harmless nurse sharks), colorful fish. Boat trip can be combined with Johnny Cay.
  • La Piscinita: Natural seawater pool on the west coast, ideal for snorkeling directly from the shore. 15,000 COP entrance fee.
  • Hoyo Soplador: Natural geyser at the southern tip — during strong waves, water shoots up to 15 meters high through a rock hole.
  • Diving: San Andrés has some of the best dive spots in the Caribbean. Coral reefs, underwater caves, barracuda schools. PADI diving courses from 800,000 COP (190€).

★★★ Providencia — The Forgotten Island

Providencia is San Andrés' small, untouched sister — and for many, the more beautiful destination. The island (only 17 km²) was 98% destroyed by Hurricane Iota in 2020 but has impressively recovered. In November 2023, UNESCO declared the Providencia Barrier Reef a Biosphere Reserve.

Providencia has no high-rise buildings, no mass tourism — only colorful wooden houses, crystal-clear water, mangrove forests, and friendly Raizales. The island can be explored on foot or by moto. Snorkeling at Crab Cay and Manzanillo Beach is among the best in the entire Caribbean.

San Andrés: Flight from Bogotá (2h, 200,000–500,000 COP / 50–120€ one-way). Tourist Tax: 140,000 COP (approx. 33€) for non-Colombians. Providencia: From San Andrés by catamaran (3h, 230,000 COP / 55€ one-way) or flight with Satena (20 min., 280,000 COP).

Achtung

San Andrés has a mandatory "Tourist Tax" (Tarjeta de Turismo): 140,000 COP (~33€) for foreigners, payable upon arrival at the airport. Without the card, you are not allowed to enter the island. Online pre-purchase is possible and saves time.
