Vesterbro — From Red-Light to Hotspot
Vesterbro is Copenhagen's most fascinating transformation: As recently as the 1990s, it was a red-light district with a drug scene and rundown facades. Today, it is the city's trendiest district — and that without losing its rough edges. Here, craft beer bars coexist alongside secondhand shops, Michelin restaurants next to snack bars, and design studios next to tattoo studios.
Kødbyen — The Meatpacking District
The Kødbyen (Meat City) is Copenhagen's version of New York's Meatpacking District: a former slaughterhouse district from the 1930s, where still-active meat businesses operate alongside restaurants, bars, galleries, and clubs. The white industrial buildings house some of the city's best restaurants:
- Kødbyens Fiskebar: One of Copenhagen's best fish restaurants — fresh catch, Nordic preparations, industrial charm.
- Gorilla: Fusion cuisine for sharing, lively atmosphere, reasonable prices by Copenhagen standards.
- BioMio: Organic restaurant with a focus on sustainability — the menu changes with the seasons.
- Jolene: Bar, bakery, and restaurant in one — sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls by day, cocktails and DJs by night.
- Bakken: Bar with Copenhagen's best cocktail menu in a former bakery. Dancing on Fridays and Saturdays.
In summer, Kødbyen transforms into a huge open-air party in the evenings: People stand with drinks in hand between the restaurants, music blares from open doors, and the atmosphere is reminiscent of Berlin-Kreuzberg or London's Shoreditch.
Istedgade — The Main Street
The Istedgade is Vesterbro's lifeline: a long street offering everything from kitsch to class. Still a bit rough at the station end (sex shops, discount stores), increasingly gentrified further west with cafes, boutiques, and bakeries. The best addresses:
- Granola: 50s-style café — the best breakfast in Vesterbro. Reserve on weekends!
- Mikkeller Bar: The world-famous Danish craft beer brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø has his flagship bar here: 40 taps with rotating beers. A mecca for beer lovers.
- Værnedamsvej: The side street of Istedgade, known as "little Paris" — French cafes, cheese shops, flower shops, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the Marais.
