Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS)
The Aeroporto de Lisboa is located just 7 km north of the city center — one of the best-located airports in Europe. From landing to the hotel in Alfama, it can take less than 30 minutes.
Flight Connections from Germany
- TAP Air Portugal — Portugal's national airline. From Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg. Flight time: 2.5–3 hours. Prices: from 80€ return.
- Ryanair / easyJet / Eurowings — Affordable connections from many German cities, often from 25€ one-way.
- Lufthansa — Direct from Frankfurt and Munich. Comfortable option.

Local Transport
Metro
Lisbon's Metro (Metropolitano de Lisboa) has 4 lines and covers the main areas. Clean, fast, affordable. Operates from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM. You need a Viva Viagem card (0.50€ one-time), on which you load trips or day passes. Single trip: 1.65€. Day pass: 6.80€ (Metro, bus, tram, Elevadores).
Tram
The historic Eléctricos (trams) are Lisbon's icons — especially the Tram 28 through Alfama and Graça. But beware: Tram 28 is crowded and a pickpocket hotspot. Price: 3€ with Viva Viagem (instead of 7€ cash with the driver). Alternative: Bus 737 follows almost the same route for 1.65€.
Elevators & Funiculars (Elevadores)
Lisbon's hills are steep — the city therefore has three funiculars (Elevador da Bica, da Glória, do Lavra) and the Elevador de Santa Justa (elevator). All are usable with the Viva Viagem. The Glória (to Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara) and the Bica (to Bairro Alto) are the most useful.
Bus
The bus network covers the entire city — particularly useful for Belém (line 15E tram or bus 728/714) and areas not reached by the metro. Night buses (Rede da Madrugada) run the main routes after midnight.
Taxi & Ridesharing
Lisbon's taxis (cream-colored or black-green) are affordable: base fare 3.25€, then 0.47€/km. A ride across the city: rarely more than 8–12€. Bolt and Uber are widely used in Lisbon and often cheaper than taxis. Bolt is the preferred app among Lisboetas.
On Foot
Lisbon is a pedestrian city — but one with hills. Comfortable shoes are essential (cobblestones + inclines = blisters). Strategy: Take metro/bus/tram uphill, then walk downhill. Alfama, Bairro Alto, and Graça are the steepest.
Tipp
Buy the Viva Viagem card (0.50€) at the airport or a metro station and load a day pass (6.80€ for 24h). This allows unlimited travel on metro, bus, tram, and the Elevadores. Significantly cheaper than single tickets.
