Padrão dos Descobrimentos & MAAT
Padrão dos Descobrimentos
The Monument of the Discoveries (1960) is a 52-meter-high concrete colossus on the banks of the Tagus, shaped like a ship's bow. On the sides stand 33 figures of Portuguese explorers, scientists, and missionaries — led by Henry the Navigator (Infante Dom Henrique). On the ground in front of the monument: a giant mosaic wind rose with the routes of the Portuguese explorers. The viewing platform (7€) offers a spectacular view of the Tagus, the Tower of Belém, and the Ponte 25 de Abril.
MAAT — Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology
The MAAT (2016) is Lisbon's most spectacular contemporary building — a curved, white shimmering wave on the banks of the Tagus, designed by British architect Amanda Levete. The walkable roof with its gentle curve is an attraction in itself — the view of the Tagus and the Ponte 25 de Abril is breathtaking. In the museum: changing exhibitions on contemporary art and technology. Admission: 11€.
Getting to Belém
From the center: Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio (20 min., 3€ with Viva Viagem) — the more scenic option, directly along the Tagus. Or: suburban train from Cais do Sodré to Belém (5 min., 1.35€). All attractions are within walking distance — plan for half to a full day in Belém.
