Lisbon is divided into distinct neighborhoods on and between its seven hills:
Alfama
For whom: Romantics, history fans, Fado lovers
The oldest district of Lisbon: a labyrinth of narrow alleys, steep stairs, azulejo facades, and hidden viewpoints. Here beats the heart of Fado. At the top, the Castelo de São Jorge offers panoramic views.
Belém
For whom: History enthusiasts, architecture fans, sweet tooths
The district of the great explorers on the Tagus: Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery (UNESCO), Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and the famous Pastelaria de Belém with the original Pastéis de Nata.
Bairro Alto & Chiado
For whom: Night owls, shoppers, culture lovers
Bairro Alto is Lisbon's nightlife district with over 250 bars. Chiado next door is the elegant literary and shopping district with the legendary Café A Brasileira and the Carmo Convent.
Baixa & Rossio
For whom: First-time visitors, strollers
The symmetrical city center, rebuilt in the Pombaline style after the 1755 earthquake. The Praça do Comércio on the Tagus, the shopping street Rua Augusta, and the lively Rossio Square.
Príncipe Real & Estrela
For whom: Trendsetters, LGBTQ+ travelers, connoisseurs
The up-and-coming trendy district with Lisbon's most beautiful park, concept stores, brunch cafés, and the impressive Basílica da Estrela.
