Saving Tips
London doesn't have to break the bank. The best strategies:
- Free Museums: British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, V&A, Imperial War Museum, National Maritime Museum (Greenwich), and many more — all completely free.
- Oyster Card / Contactless: Never buy single tickets at the counter! Oyster Card or contactless payment (Apple Pay, credit card) have a daily cap: No matter how often you travel, you never pay more than £8.10 (Zone 1–2) per day.
- TKTS Leicester Square: The official ticket booth at Leicester Square sells last-minute tickets for West End shows with up to 50% discount. Queue on the same day, from 10 am, best selection in the morning.
- Meal Deals: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Boots, and Pret offer Meal Deals (sandwich + snack + drink) from £3.50 — the cheapest lunch in London.
- Pub Sunday Roast: On Sundays, many pubs offer a complete roast meal (roast beef/chicken with sides) for £12–16 — a British experience and good value for money.
- Markets instead of Restaurants: Borough Market, Camden Market, Brick Lane Market — all have excellent street food from £5–8.
- Boris Bikes (Santander Cycles): Rental bikes for £1.65 per 30-minute ride. For short distances in the center, cheaper and faster than the Tube.
- Free Walking Tours: Free Walking Tours (tip-based) are available daily from several meeting points. 2–3 hours with a local guide through the city — you decide at the end what it's worth to you.
