When to go to Madeira?
Spring (March–May): Flower Splendor and Hiking Paradise
Arguably the most beautiful season in Madeira. In April/May, Funchal celebrates the famous Festa da Flor (Flower Festival) — the entire city is decorated with flowers, and there are parades, concerts, and exhibitions. The temperatures are perfect for hiking (18–22°C), the levadas carry plenty of water (spectacular waterfalls!), and the landscape glows in lush green. Spring is ideal for active travelers who want to combine nature and culture.
Summer (June–August): Sun-Sure and Warm
Madeira's high season, but much more relaxed than Mediterranean destinations. 23–26°C, little rain, perfect beach and hiking weather. The south coast is sunny and warm, the mountains clear (best time for Pico do Arieiro!), and the sea reaches its most pleasant temperatures. Prices rise, but Madeira never gets as crowded as Mallorca or Santorini. Many local festivals take place in August.
Autumn (September–November): Warmest Sea and Wine Festival
Madeira's underrated insider tip: The sea is warmest in September/October (23°C), the summer heat subsides, and in September, Funchal celebrates the Madeira Wine Festival — grape harvest, tastings, and folklore in the wine cellars. The hiking trails are less crowded, the light turns golden, and prices drop. November brings more rain, but also dramatic cloud formations over the mountains.
Winter (December–February): New Year's Spectacle and Mild Days
Madeira's winter is Europe's mildest: 16–19°C, green landscapes, blooming gardens. The highlight is New Year's Eve in Funchal — the fireworks over the harbor are among the largest in the world according to the Guinness Book. In February, the Carnival takes place, one of the best outside Brazil. Ideal for hikers, cultural travelers, and anyone looking to escape the Northern European winter. Many Germans, Brits, and Scandinavians spend the winter in Madeira.
💡 Tipp
The absolute best travel time for Madeira: May to June (dry, blooming, perfect for hiking) or September to October (warmest sea, wine festival, fewer tourists). But honestly: Madeira works all year round — even in January, 17°C and sunshine are possible, while Germany experiences sub-zero temperatures.
