Penang

George Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008 — and rightly so. The historic old town is a living museum of Malaysia's multicultural history: Colonial shophouses with five-foot ways (five-foot-wide covered walkways), Chinese clan temples, Indian mosques, British fortresses, and traces of 500 years of trade between East and West.

Unlike many UNESCO sites, George Town is not a museum — the city is alive. Families live in the shophouses, hawkers cook their Char Kway Teow over blazing flames, and craftsmen repair bicycles as they did 50 years ago. The contrast between crumbling charm and modern street art, between old clan houses and trendy cafés, makes George Town unique.

The Main Attractions

• Fort Cornwallis: The largest intact fortress in Malaysia (1786), where Captain Francis Light claimed the island for the British. Today a park with cannons and a small museum.
• Khoo Kongsi: The most magnificent Chinese clan temple in all of Southeast Asia — a 150-year-old masterpiece with gold decorations, stone reliefs, and an impressive theater hall. The Khoo clan once controlled the tin trade.
• Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Blue Mansion): The "indigo-blue" mansion of a Chinese merchant — beautifully restored, now a boutique hotel and museum. Guided tours daily.
• Little India: Colorful streets full of spice shops, sari stores, flower garlands, and the scent of biryani and Roti Canai.
• Clan Jetties: Floating villages at the harbor — Chinese stilt houses on the water, inhabited by the same clans since the 19th century. Chew Jetty is the largest and most touristy.

In 2012, Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic turned George Town into an open-air gallery — creating a worldwide hype that finally put the city on the tourist map. His murals, integrating real objects (bicycles, motorbikes, swings) into painted scenes, are iconic.

The Most Famous Works

• "Children on a Bicycle" (Armenian Street) — The most iconic mural in Penang. Two children on a real bicycle, painted on the wall. The most photographed motif in the city. Come early in the morning, or you'll be in line.
• "Boy on a Motorbike" (Ah Quee Street) — A boy on a real, wall-mounted motorbike.
• "Children on the Swing" (Gat Lebuh Chulia) — Children on a real swing.
• "Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur" (Ah Quee Street) — A boy walking a dinosaur on a leash.

Besides Zacharevic's works, there are dozens of iron caricatures (Iron Caricature Series) — black wire figures depicting humorous scenes from old George Town, equipped with QR codes that tell stories. Additionally, new murals by local and international artists keep appearing. The Hin Bus Depot Art Centre is a former bus depot hall now serving as a gallery and creative space.

Penang is not just good at food — Penang is food. The island holds the unofficial title of "Street Food Capital of Asia" and lives up to it every day. The unique blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Nyonya cuisine (Peranakan — the descendants of Chinese traders and Malay women) creates a culinary diversity found nowhere else in the world.

Must-Try Dishes

• Char Kway Teow: Penang's most famous dish — flat rice noodles stir-fried in a wok over high flame, with prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts, and Chinese sausage. The "Wok Hei" (wok breath, the smoky note) makes the difference. Best spot: Sisters Char Kway Teow, Lorong Selamat.
• Assam Laksa: CNN's "#7 of the world's best dishes" — sour, fishy noodle soup with tamarind, mackerel, mint, ginger, and shrimp paste. Unique to Penang and absolutely addictive. Best at Air Itam Laksa, at the foot of the Kek Lok Si Temple.
• Cendol: Green rice noodle worms in coconut milk with palm sugar and ice — Penang's answer to ice cream. The most famous Cendol stall is on Penang Road (Teochew Cendol).
• Nasi Kandar: A mountain of rice with a selection of various curries poured over — Malay-Indian comfort food. Nasi Kandar Line Clear (Lebuh Chulia) is open 24 hours and legendary.
• Roti Canai: Fluffy, crispy flatbread with dhal curry — the universal Malaysian breakfast, but perfected in Penang.
• Hokkien Mee: Prawn noodle soup — not to be confused with the KL version. The Penang variant is a clear, aromatic soup with prawns, pork, and egg.

The Best Hawker Centres

• Gurney Drive Hawker Centre: The classic — dozens of stalls by the sea with a view of the skyline.
• New Lane Hawker (Lorong Baru): The most authentic hawker street where locals eat.
• Lebuh Kimberly Night Market: Evening hawker market with Chinese specialties.
• Red Garden Food Paradise: Tourist-friendly with live music, but good quality.

The Kek Lok Si Temple (Temple of Supreme Bliss) is the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia — a colorful complex sprawling over a hillside above Air Itam. Built since 1890 and still expanding, it combines Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architecture in a single complex.

The centerpiece is the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas (Ban Po Thar) — a seven-story tower with a Chinese base, Thai middle, and Burmese top. Each floor houses thousands of Buddha statues in various poses. Above it towers a 36.6-meter high bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) under a covered pavilion.

The complex is vast — it takes 1–2 hours to explore everything. Stairs and a funicular (2 MYR) connect the different levels. The view over George Town and the coast is fantastic. During the Chinese New Year, the entire temple is adorned with tens of thousands of lanterns — a magical sight.

Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) is the highest point on the island at 833 meters — and a welcome escape from the heat. It's 5–8 °C cooler up there than in George Town, and the view over the island, the bridge to the mainland, and the Strait of Malacca is spectacular. The funicular railway takes you up in 5 minutes — one of Asia's steepest funiculars, in operation since 1923.

At the top, there's a skywalk (The Habitat), trails through the misty forest, an owl museum, colonial bungalows from the British era, and David Brown's Restaurant — afternoon tea with colonial charm and panoramic views. For the adventurous: The Curtis Tree Top Walk in the Habitat (15 MYR) is a canopy walkway 40 meters above the jungle floor.

Batu Ferringhi Beach

The most famous beach in Penang — a 2 km long bay on the north coast with hotels, water sports, and a bustling night market. The beach is not a paradise beach in the Maldives sense, but for an afternoon of jet skiing, parasailing, or just sunbathing, it's quite pleasant. The night market (from 19:00) is lively — clothing, souvenirs, fake watches, and a good selection of street food.

For nicer beaches, head further to Monkey Beach (by boat from Teluk Bahang, 15 min.) or to the Penang National Park — Malaysia's smallest national park with hiking trails, sea turtles, and deserted beaches (Turtle Beach).
