The Seasons in Malta

Spring (March–May): The Perfect Travel Time

Spring is the best travel time for most visitors. Pleasant 17–24°C, little rain, green landscape (Malta's only green season!) and significantly fewer tourists than in summer. In April and May, wild orchids, poppies, and thyme bloom — the islands are intensely fragrant with herbs. The water temperature rises to 18°C from May, making swimming possible for the hardy. Hiking, cycling, and sightseeing are perfect at these temperatures.

Summer (June–September): Beach & Heat

The Maltese summer is hot and dry. July and August regularly reach 33–38°C, the sea warms to a pleasant 25–27°C. The landscape is parched and brown, but the beaches and rock pools are in top form. Note: Tourist crowds concentrate in July/August — the Blue Lagoon is then overcrowded, prices are highest. September is ideal: still warm enough for swimming (25°C water), but quieter and cheaper.

Autumn (October–November): Off-Season Insider Tip

October is an excellent travel month: water temperature still 22°C, air temperature 19–25°C, fewer tourists, falling prices. Mid-October marks the start of the rainy season, but showers are usually short and intense, followed by sunshine. Perfect for culture, hiking, and diving. In November, it gets cooler and rainier, but still milder than in Central Europe.

Winter (December–February): Mild & Culture-Intensive

Malta's winter is mild and wet: 10–16°C, rainier than summer, but rarely below 10°C. Too cold for swimming, but ideal for cultural trips, archaeology, and hiking. Prices are at their lowest, attractions are empty. In February, the colorful carnival in Valletta begins — a spectacle. Malta's winter is perfect for those wanting to escape the Central European gray: even in January, the sun shines more often than in Germany from April to October.
