Practical Information
Electricity & Adapters
Malta uses the British plug type G (three rectangular pins). You need an adapter! The voltage (230V) is the same as in Germany, so all devices work — only the plug doesn't fit. Adapters are available in every supermarket and at many hotel receptions (often available for free). Tip: Bring a universal adapter from home.
Internet & SIM Cards
EU roaming applies: You can use your German SIM card in Malta without additional costs (just like at home). Wi-Fi is available in almost all hotels, restaurants, and cafes. For intensive use: local SIM cards from GO Mobile, Melita, or Epic are available at the airport and in shops from 10€ with 10 GB data volume.
Tips
Tipping is not mandatory in Malta, but appreciated:
- Restaurant: 5–10% for good service, if not already included in the bill (check for "service charge included").
- Taxi/Bolt: Not expected, rounding up is sufficient.
- Hotel: 1–2€ per day for the chambermaid.
- Tour Guide: 5–10€ per person for a full-day tour.
Opening Hours
Malta follows a Mediterranean rhythm: Many shops close at midday (1–4 PM), especially in rural areas. Supermarkets are open continuously (Mon–Sat 7 AM–8 PM, Sun 7 AM–1 PM). Museums are usually open 9 AM–5 PM, often closed on Mondays. Restaurants open for dinner from 7 PM — if you arrive at 6 PM, you'll sit alone.
