Arrival by Plane
Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK)
The Aéroport Marrakech-Ménara is located just 6 km southwest of the Medina — one of the closest airports to a city center worldwide. From landing to the Riad in the Medina: under 30 minutes.
Flight Connections from Germany

- easyJet: From Berlin and Basel.
- Eurowings: From Cologne and Düsseldorf.
- Royal Air Maroc: Direct from Frankfurt — Morocco's national airline. More comfortable, but more expensive.
- Condor: Direct from Frankfurt.
Marrakech is one of the cheapest flight destinations from Germany — round trip from 50–100€ with budget airlines.
From the Airport to the Medina
| Option | Price | Duration | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petit Taxi | 70–100 MAD (7–10€) | 15–20 Min. | Beige taxis in front of the terminal. Insist on the meter or negotiate beforehand! |
| Bus No. 19 | 30 MAD (3€) | 20–30 Min. | To Djemaa el-Fna. Every 20–30 Min. Cheapest option. |
| Private Transfer | 100–150 MAD (10–15€) | 15–20 Min. | Bookable via Riad — someone waits at the airport with a sign. Most reliable option. |
Tipp
Order the airport transfer through your Riad — most offer it for 100–150 MAD, and the driver will wait for you with your name at the exit. Alternatively: Petit Taxi with a meter. WITHOUT a meter: accept a maximum of 100 MAD.
Local Transport
On Foot
The Medina is a pedestrian city — cars barely fit through the narrow alleys. This is both the charm and the challenge: you will get lost. Guaranteed. And that's a good thing. Google Maps works surprisingly well in the Medina — use it as a backup, but also let yourself wander.
Petit Taxi
The beige Petit Taxis are Marrakech's standard transport. They operate within the city (not to the airport or outside). ALWAYS insist on the meter! If the driver refuses to turn it on: get out and take the next taxi. Typical prices with a meter:
- Medina → Gueliz: 15–25 MAD (1.50–2.50€)
- Medina → Jardin Majorelle: 20–30 MAD
- Within the Medina: 10–15 MAD
At night (20:00–6:00) a 50% surcharge applies. Petit Taxis take a maximum of 3 passengers.
Grand Taxi
Grand Taxis (beige Mercedes limousines) run fixed routes to destinations outside the city — Ourika Valley, Essaouira, airport. They wait at Bab er-Rob or Bab Doukkala until full (6 passengers). Very cheap, but cramped. For private rides: negotiate the price (whole car).
Calèche (Horse-drawn Carriage)
The horse-drawn carriages are Marrakech's most touristy transport — nice for a round around the city wall or to Jardin Majorelle. Negotiate the price beforehand: 150–200 MAD for an hour is fair. Without negotiation, you easily pay three times as much.
Moped & Bicycle
In the Medina: stay away from mopeds — the alleys are narrow, confusing, and full of pedestrians. In Gueliz and to the palm grove: bicycle or e-scooter are an option. Medina Bike and Marrakech Vélo rent bikes from 100 MAD/day.
Achtung
Petit Taxis without a meter are the most common tourist trap in Marrakech. ALWAYS insist on "compteur" (meter). If the driver refuses: say "La, compteur!" and get out. There are plenty of honest drivers.
