Money-Saving Tips
Marrakech is already affordable — with these tips, it becomes even cheaper:
- Eating on the Djemaa: The food stalls (stands 1–100) serve fresh tajines, grilled meat, and salads for €3–5. Quality and hygiene are better than their reputation — look for the stalls where locals eat.
- Haggle, haggle, haggle: In the souk, there are no fixed prices. Start at 30–50% of the quoted price. Important: Only haggle if you really want to buy. Walking away is the strongest negotiation tactic.
- Local hammam instead of luxury: A traditional neighborhood hammam costs 10–20 MAD (€1–2) plus 50 MAD for a gommage (scrub). The more authentic experience for a fraction of the luxury hammam prices.
- Orange juice on the Djemaa: Stands No. 1–40 at Djemaa el-Fna sell freshly squeezed orange juice for 4 MAD (€0.40) — the best orange juice of your life.
- Petit Taxi: The small beige taxis in Marrakech have meters — insist that it is turned on! Without a meter: a maximum of 20 MAD within the Medina.
- Riad with breakfast: Almost all riads offer Moroccan breakfast included — msemen (flatbread), harcha, amlou (almond paste), jam, mint tea, coffee, eggs, and orange juice. The most lavish breakfast in the world, and it's included in the room price.
- Free attractions: Koutoubia Mosque (from the outside), the souks, the Djemaa el-Fna, the Menara Gardens — the best experiences cost nothing.
