Where to Eat — A Guide
Food Stalls (Djemaa el-Fna)
The cheapest and most exciting option: over 100 stalls on Djemaa el-Fna serve fresh tajines, grilled skewers, harira, merguez, and snail soup from sunset. 30–50 MAD for a complete meal. Look for stalls with many locals — they know where it's good.
Riad Dinner
Many Riads offer dinner by reservation — often a multi-course menu: harira, tajine or couscous, salads, bread, and dessert. Cooked by the house mother (Dada), served in the courtyard by candlelight. 150–250 MAD per person — the most authentic culinary experience.
Restaurants in the Medina
- Nomad: Modern Moroccan restaurant with a rooftop terrace on the edge of Djemaa. Creative interpretation of classics — tajine with a twist. Reservation recommended. Main course: 80–120 MAD.
- Dar Yacout: Legendary Riad restaurant — an opulent, multi-course menu (pastilla, tajine, couscous, desserts) in a palace with a pool and views over the Medina. Fixed price: about 700 MAD per person. Reservation required.
- Le Jardin: Hidden garden restaurant in the Medina — a green oasis with Moroccan-international cuisine. Perfect for a lunch break. Main course: 60–100 MAD.
- Café des Épices: On Place Rahba Kedima — mint tea, light dishes, and views over the spice square rooftops. Perfect for the afternoon.
Cooking Class
A Moroccan cooking class is one of the best experiences in Marrakech: shopping in the souk in the morning (spices, vegetables, meat), then preparing tajine, pastilla, and couscous in a Riad kitchen — under the guidance of a Dada (cook). 250–500 MAD per person, including food and recipes to take home. Providers: Maison Arabe, La Maison Tombée du Ciel, Café Clock.
