Ourika Valley — Mountains, Villages & Waterfalls
The Ourika Valley is the most popular day trip from Marrakech — and rightly so. Just one hour south of the city, a green valley opens up in the High Atlas: terraced fields, Berber villages made of clay, walnut and olive trees, and at the end, the Setti Fatma Waterfalls. The temperature is 5–10°C cooler than in Marrakech — a welcome contrast in summer.
What to Experience?
- Setti Fatma Waterfalls: Seven cascades, of which the lowest two are easily accessible (30-minute hike). Refreshing, picturesque, and a popular bathing spot in summer. A local guide (50–100 MAD) is recommended — the path is not always clear.
- Berber Villages: Along the valley are traditional Berber villages with clay houses built into the mountain slopes. Some offer Berber tea and lunch for visitors — an authentic experience.
- Saffron Farm: At Tnine de l'Ourika, there is a saffron cooperative that explains the cultivation and sells genuine saffron — significantly cheaper than in the souk and guaranteed authentic.
- Cooking Class in the Valley: Several providers offer cooking classes in Berber homes — shopping at the local market in the morning, then cooking tagine outdoors.
💡 Tipp
The easiest way: Organized day trip through your Riad (200–400 MAD per person) or Grand Taxi from Bab er-Rob (15–20 MAD per person, shared taxi). Best during the week — on weekends, the Marrakchis come for picnics and it gets crowded.
