Neighborhoods at a Glance
Marrakech is clearly divided into the historic Medina and the modern Ville Nouvelle:
Medina & Souks
For whom: Adventurers, culture lovers, photographers
The old town surrounded by red clay walls (UNESCO World Heritage) with the Djemaa el-Fna, the souk labyrinth, palaces, mosques, and the most beautiful riads. Here beats the heart of Marrakech—loud, chaotic, and irresistible.
Djemaa el-Fna & Surroundings
For whom: Anyone coming to Marrakech
Africa's most famous square is Marrakech's center—the gateway between Medina and souks, surrounded by rooftop cafés overlooking the evening spectacle.
Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle / New Town)
For whom: Shoppers, café fans, modernists
The new town built by the French: wide boulevards, European cafés, boutiques, galleries, and the Jardin Majorelle. More relaxed and Western than the Medina—the perfect contrast.
Mellah (Jewish Quarter)
For whom: History enthusiasts, those seeking peace
South of the Medina: the historic Jewish district with the Slat al-Azama synagogue, the spice market, and the Bahia Palace. Quieter and less touristy than the souks.
