The Two Seasons
Summer / Rainy Season (November–April): Hot & Tropical
Temperatures climb to 28–33°C, humidity is 80–90%. Short, intense rain showers are possible almost daily — mostly in the afternoon, followed by bright sunshine. The southeast (Belle Mare, Flacq) receives significantly more rain than the sheltered northwest (Grand Baie). The vegetation explodes: tropical flowers everywhere, mangoes and lychees ripen.
Cyclone Season: From January to March there is a risk of tropical cyclones. Direct hits are rare (every 5–10 years), but possible. The hotels are well prepared — cyclone warnings are issued early. In the event of a cyclone: 1–2 days of storm warning, beach closed, then quickly back to normal.
Winter / Dry Season (May–October): Ideal & Pleasant
The best travel time for most visitors. Temperatures from 20–26°C, low humidity, hardly any rain, and constant trade winds. Perfect for beach, water sports, hiking, and sightseeing. The evenings can get cool (16–18°C, especially in the highlands) — pack a light jacket. July and August are the coolest months.
High Season: December–January (European Christmas holidays + Mauritian summer) and July–August (European summer holidays). In these months, hotels are more expensive and fuller. The months of May, June, September, and October offer the best price-weather ratio.
💡 Tipp
The ideal travel time for Mauritius is May to November — pleasant temperatures, little rain, more affordable than the high season. September and October are particularly recommended: warm, dry, fewer tourists, and the whales pass by.
