Port Louis — The Capital

Port Louis is the beating heart of Mauritius — a compact, chaotic, fascinating capital that is as multicultural as few other cities in the world. About 150,000 people live here, squeezed between the Moka mountain range and the harbor. Port Louis is not a resort town but a working city — and that's what makes it authentic.

Central Market

The Central Market is the heart of Port Louis and a feast for all the senses. In the historic hall and the surrounding streets, you can find everything: mountains of tropical fruits (mangoes, lychees, pineapples, passion fruit), spices in all colors (turmeric, cardamom, cumin, chili), vanilla straight from the producer, handmade baskets, textiles, and of course, street food. Dholl Puri, Briani, Gâteau Piment — the market is the best and cheapest place to try Mauritian cuisine. Bargaining is common and expected.

Caudan Waterfront

At the harbor lies the modernized Caudan Waterfront district: shops, restaurants, cinemas, a small handicraft center, and the Blue Penny Museum. The museum houses the famous Blue Mauritius — one of the rarest and most valuable stamps in the world (1847). Only two copies exist, one is here under the strictest security. Admission: 250 MUR (approx. 5€).

Chinatown

A few streets behind the Central Market lies Chinatown — a lively district with Chinese temples, traditional medicine pharmacies, Asian supermarkets, and the best dim sum and noodle soups on the island. The Kwan Tee Pagoda with its red lanterns is particularly photogenic. During Chinese New Year (January/February), the district transforms into a sea of dragons, fireworks, and festivity.

Other Attractions

  • Aapravasi Ghat (UNESCO World Heritage) — The immigration station through which around 500,000 Indian indentured laborers came to Mauritius between 1834 and 1920 after slavery was abolished. A moving monument of migration history with exhibitions and tours. Admission: free.
  • Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle) — The British fortress on the hill above Port Louis offers the best panorama over the city, the harbor, and the mountains. Admission: free. Best visited in the afternoon when the sun illuminates the mountains.
  • Jummah Mosque — The most beautiful mosque on the island (1852), a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture in the middle of the business district. Can be visited outside prayer times.

Achtung

Port Louis is a working city — on weekends and holidays, the center is like a ghost town. The Central Market closes at 5:30 pm. Plan your visit during the week (Mon–Fri) and preferably in the morning when the market is most lively.
