Water Sports
The northwest is the water sports center of the island:
- Diving: Numerous diving schools in Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches offer dives for beginners and advanced divers. Highlights: Coin de Mire (rock formations, turtles), the wreck of the Stella Maru (at 25 m depth), and the Cathedral — a huge underwater cave. A dive from 2,000 MUR (40€), PADI Open Water course from 18,000 MUR (360€).
- Catamaran Tours: Full-day sailing trips to the northern islands (Ilot Gabriel, Ile Plate) with snorkeling, BBQ lunch, and open bar. From 2,000 MUR (40€) per person — one of the best value-for-money experiences in Mauritius.
- Glass Bottom Boat: The perfect alternative to snorkeling for non-swimmers. The coral reefs and tropical fish are clearly visible through the glass bottom. From 800 MUR (16€).
- Parasailing & Jet Ski: Available at the main beaches, especially in Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. Parasailing from 1,500 MUR (30€), Jet Ski from 2,000 MUR (40€) for 30 minutes.
Nightlife
Grand Baie is the only place in Mauritius with a real nightlife. The main street (Royal Road) and the surrounding alleys host bars, lounges, and clubs, open mainly on Fridays and Saturdays until the early morning hours. The crowd is a mix of tourists and Mauritians — the atmosphere international and relaxed. Happy Hour is almost everywhere between 5 and 7 pm. Clubs rarely charge entry fees, instead making money from drinks. The scene is safe and friendly — Mauritius is not a place for aggressive partying, but for relaxed celebrations under palm trees.
