Le Morne Brabant — UNESCO World Heritage

The Le Morne Brabant is the most powerful symbol of Mauritius — a massive, 556-meter-high basalt rock at the southwestern tip of the island, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Not for its geological significance, but for its tragic history: In the 18th and 19th centuries, runaway slaves (Maroons) fled to the summit of the nearly unreachable rock and founded a community in freedom. When in 1835 the British police came to deliver the news of the abolition of slavery, the Maroons — believing they would be captured — threw themselves off the cliffs to their deaths. Le Morne has since become a symbol of freedom and resistance.

Climbing Le Morne

The hike up Le Morne is one of the most impressive experiences in Mauritius. The trail begins at the foot of the peninsula and leads in 3–4 hours (round trip) through tropical vegetation to the cross on the summit plateau. The last 100 meters in altitude are steep and rocky — sturdy footwear and a head for heights are required. Once at the top, a 360-degree panorama unfolds over the entire southwest coast, the turquoise lagoon, and on clear days to Rodrigues Island. A guide is recommended and mandatory since 2023 (from 1,500 MUR / €30 per person).

Beaches at Le Morne

The peninsula offers spectacular beaches on both sides:

  • Le Morne Beach (west side): The famous beach with a view of the rock — perfect for the legendary sunset. Shallow, warm water, ideal for families.
  • Kite Beach (south side): Mauritius' kitesurfing mecca. Constant southeast trade winds, shallow lagoon — one of the world's best spots. Beginner courses from 5,000 MUR (€100) for 3 hours.

💡 Tipp

The famous "underwater waterfall" of Mauritius is an optical illusion visible only from above (helicopter or drone): sand and sediment are swept by the current over the edge of the reef into the depths, appearing from the air like a waterfall under the sea. Helicopter flights from around €200 per person.
