Frida Kahlo — The Icon

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is Mexico's most famous artist and a global pop icon — her face with the unibrow and flower crown is recognizable worldwide.

Life & Work

At 18, Frida suffered a severe bus accident: broken spine, broken pelvis, pierced abdomen. She spent months in bed and began painting — with a mirror above the bed, she painted her famous self-portraits: brutally honest, full of pain, symbolism, and mexicanidad.

Her marriage to the 20-year-older Diego Rivera was famously turbulent — both had affairs (Frida also with women), divorced, and remarried. Frida's art processed her physical and emotional sufferings: miscarriages, surgeries, Diego's infidelity.

  • Palacio de Bellas Artes: "The Two Fridas" hangs in the Museo de Arte Moderno next door.
