Xochimilco — Floating Gardens★★
Xochimilco (pronounced: "So-tschi-MIL-ko") is the last remnant of the Aztec lake system on which Tenochtitlán was built. The Chinampas — floating gardens created by the Aztecs in the 14th century from reeds and soil on the lake — are still used for agriculture today. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The main tourist attraction is the Trajineras: brightly painted flatboats (about 6×2 m) that are poled through the labyrinthine canal system. Along the way, boats with Mariachi bands, food, and drinks cross paths. On weekends, Xochimilco becomes a floating folk festival — loud, colorful, and absolutely unique.
