Valladolid — Colonial Jewel★★
Valladolid is the perfect counterpoint to the archaeological sites: a sleepy colonial town with pastel-colored buildings, a beautiful cathedral, and some of the most beautiful cenotes in Yucatán right in the city.
Sights
- Convento de San Bernardino de Siena: One of the oldest monasteries in the Americas (1552). Massive fortress walls, impressive frescoes, and its own cenote in the courtyard!
- Cenote Zací: Right in the city! Open cenote with lush vegetation. Less spectacular than others, but conveniently accessible. 30 MXN.
- Calzada de los Frailes: The prettiest street in the city — colorful colonial houses, boutiques, and cafes connect the plaza with the monastery.
- Cenote Suytun & Cenote Oxman: Both just 15 minutes away (see cenote section).
Valladolid is an ideal stopover between Cancún and Mérida and an excellent base for Chichén Itzá (45 km) and the surrounding cenotes. 2–3 nights are perfect.
💡 Tipp
Valladolid is significantly cheaper than Cancún or Tulum — and much more authentic. As a base for Chichén Itzá and cenotes, it is ideal: You are at the ruins by 8 a.m., before the buses from Cancún arrive.
