Money & Currency
Kyat (MMK) & US Dollar
The official currency is the Kyat (pronounced: Chat, abbreviation MMK). In practice, many tourist services — hotels, entries, domestic flights, some tours — are calculated and paid in US Dollars. There is effectively a dual currency system.
Exchange rate (indicative): 1 EUR approx. 3,500 MMK / 1 USD approx. 3,300 MMK. Note: Since the coup in 2021, there are significant differences between the official rate and the black market rate. The currency is unstable and fluctuating.
US Dollars must be PERFECT!
Myanmar only accepts flawless, clean US dollar bills: No crease, no tear, no stamp, no mark, no stain. Bills from before 2006 are often rejected. Bring fresh, smooth bills — best ordered from your bank in Germany and in various denominations (1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 USD).
ATMs & Credit Cards
- ATMs: Available in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Nyaung Shwe, and most larger cities. Visa and Mastercard accepted. Fees: 5,000 MMK (approx. 1.50 EUR) per withdrawal. Maximum: 300,000–500,000 MMK.
- Credit Cards: Only in upscale hotels and restaurants in Yangon and Mandalay. In rural areas: cash only.
- Exchange offices: At Yangon Airport and in the cities. Often offer better rates than ATMs. Using the black market exchange rate is risky and officially illegal.
💡 Tipp
Bring at least 300–500 USD in clean, new bills — this is your emergency reserve and your means of payment for hotels and tours. Exchange the majority at Yangon Airport into Kyat (best rate), keep a supply of small dollar bills for hotels and entries. In rural areas, there are NO ATMs — plan cash for the entire route in advance.
