Ngapali Beach
Myanmar's Most Beautiful Beach
Ngapali Beach on the west coast by the Bay of Bengal is Myanmar's answer to Thailand's beaches — only without the crowds, without the full moon parties, and without the jet ski vendors. A 3 km long palm beach with white sand and turquoise water, lined with a handful of upscale resorts and a few simple guesthouses. The perfect conclusion to an intense Myanmar tour, when body and mind need a break after days full of temples, night buses, and cultural impressions.
Ngapali is not a party place and not a backpacker hangout — it is a place of peace, idleness, and fresh fish. The infrastructure is deliberately limited: no neon signs, no shopping centers, no bars with techno music. Instead: the sound of the waves, the smell of grilled fish, and dinners with your feet in the sand.
What to Expect
- Beach: Wide, clean, never crowded. The water is warm (26–29°C) and calm — perfect for swimming. The currents are minimal.
- Fishing Villages: At the northern end of the beach, you'll still find traditional fishing villages where the catch is brought ashore at 6 AM. It doesn't get any fresher.
- Snorkeling: The offshore islands offer good snorkeling opportunities with colorful corals and tropical fish. Boat trip from 15 USD.
- Cycling: Rent bicycles (2–3 USD/day) and cycle along the coastal road — past rice fields, small pagodas, and sleepy villages.
- Seafood: Freshly caught fish and shrimp grilled directly on the beach, with garlic, chili, and lime. A seafood dinner with beer: 5–10 EUR.
Practical Information
- Getting There: Flight from Yangon (1h, approx. 60–100 EUR) to Thandwe, then 15 min. taxi to the beach. There is no practical land route — flying is the only sensible option.
- Season: October–April (dry season). Most hotels close during the rainy season (May–September).
- Accommodations: Budget: Lin Thar Oo Lodge (from 30 EUR). Mid-range: Bayview Beach Resort (from 60 EUR). Luxury: Sandoway Resort (from 150 EUR). Book in advance during peak season!
