Waterberg Plateau★★
The Waterberg Plateau rises like a giant table mountain 200 meters above the flat bushland — a brick-red sandstone block 50 km long and 16 km wide, covered with dense bush forest. It is Namibia's greenest place — because the porous sandstone layers store rainwater and release it slowly like a sponge.
The Waterberg has multiple levels of significance:
- Nature reserve: The plateau is a breeding station for endangered species — white and black rhinos, sable antelopes, roan antelopes, and buffaloes live here in a protected environment
- Hiking paradise: Several hiking trails lead onto the plateau and along the cliffs — with breathtaking views over the endless bushland. The 42-km circular trail (4 days) is Namibia's best multi-day hike
- Historical site: At the foot of the Waterberg, the Battle of Waterberg took place in 1904 — the decisive battle between the Herero and German colonial troops, after which General von Trotha issued the extermination order. The German soldiers' cemetery and the Herero monument commemorate this dark history
The Waterberg is located on the route between Windhoek and Etosha and is an ideal stopover (about 300 km north of Windhoek). NWR operates the Waterberg Camp with chalets, campsite, and pool — a beautiful place to relax.
💡 Tipp
The guided afternoon rhino drive is one of the best ways to see rhinos in Namibia — fewer tourists than in Etosha and often closer. Bookable at the NWR camp.
