New Zealand's Wines & Craft Beer
New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough has revolutionized the wine world — no other country has built such a global reputation in such a short time (since the 1980s). But New Zealand is capable of much more than just Sauvi.
The Wine Regions
| Region | Variety | Character | Wineries to Visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marlborough | Sauvignon Blanc | Intense, passionfruit, gooseberry, grassy | Cloudy Bay, Villa Maria, Framingham |
| Central Otago | Pinot Noir | Elegant, cherry, spices — among the best in the world | Felton Road, Burn Cottage, Chard Farm |
| Hawke's Bay | Chardonnay, Syrah | Full-bodied, ripe, Bordeaux-like blends | Craggy Range, Te Mata, Church Road |
| Waiheke Island | Bordeaux blends, Syrah | Premium, Mediterranean, elegant | Mudbrick, Cable Bay, Stonyridge |
| Martinborough | Pinot Noir | Burgundian, complex, earthy | Ata Rangi, Martinborough Vineyard, Palliser |
The Marlborough wine region is to Sauvignon Blanc what Bordeaux is to Cabernet Sauvignon — the global benchmark. The typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc bursts with aromas: passionfruit, gooseberry, cut grass, citrus. Over 35 wineries offer tastings (5–15 NZD, often deductible from purchase). The best way: bike tour (from 55 NZD/day with Explore Marlborough) between the flat vineyards — safe, eco-friendly, and you can enjoy every tasting.
Craft Beer — The Revolution
New Zealand's craft beer scene has grown explosively — over 200 independent breweries across the country, one of the highest densities worldwide for 5 million inhabitants. New Zealand's unique hop varieties (Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Riwaka) give the beers tropical aromas that are in demand worldwide.
- Garage Project (Wellington): New Zealand's most creative brewery — over 200 different beers per year, from Imperial Stout with Mānuka honey to sour beers with feijoa and Pale Ales with Nelson Sauvin. Taproom: 68 Aro Street. Pint from 12 NZD.
- Epic Brewing (Auckland): Hoppy IPAs and Pale Ales respected in the international scene.
- Emerson's (Dunedin): Pioneer of the NZ craft beer scene since 1992. The "Pilsner" is a classic.
- Panhead (Upper Hutt): American-inspired ales with a New Zealand twist. The "Supercharger APA" is ubiquitous.
- Good George (Hamilton): Brewed in a converted Anglican church — the atmosphere alone is worth the visit.
- Behemoth (Auckland): Experimental, fun labels, excellent hop-forward beers.
💡 Tipp
Marlborough is the richest wine region — but Central Otago produces the better Pinot Noir. For a wine tour in Marlborough: bike tours (from 55 NZD) are the most beautiful and safest way to travel between the flat vineyards. Most tastings cost 5–15 NZD, often deductible from purchases. For craft beer: Wellington's Aro Street has the highest density of taprooms — perfect for a beer walk.
