SoHo, Village & High Line

SoHo (South of Houston)

SoHo is New York's most stylish district — former factory floors with cast-iron facades (Cast Iron Architecture), converted into boutiques, galleries, designer stores, and lofts that cost millions. The Cast Iron Historic District (Broome Street, Greene Street) has the world's largest concentration of cast-iron buildings. Shopping: from Apple and Nike to independent designers. Architecture: look up — the fire escapes and facades are as photogenic as a film set.

Greenwich Village

The Village is New York's bohemian heart — since the 1950s home to Beatniks (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg), folk music (Bob Dylan played his first gigs at Café Wha?), the LGBTQ+ movement (the Stonewall Inn riots of 1969 are considered the birth of the modern gay movement), and a creative scene that is still alive today.

  • Washington Square Park: The living room of the Village — the iconic triumphal arch, the fountain (where street musicians and chess-loving retirees play), the NYU students, and an atmosphere that smells of freedom and creativity.
  • Bleecker Street: The main axis of the Village — restaurants, bars, vintage shops, and the famous Bleecker Street Pizza (John's of Bleecker Street — since 1929, brick-oven pizza).
  • West Village: Tree-lined streets with brownstones, the setting of "Sex and the City" (Carrie's stoop: 66 Perry Street) and "Friends" (the building: 90 Bedford Street). The most beautiful residential streets in Manhattan.

The High Line

The High Line is a disused freight rail line (1934) converted into a 2.3 km long park in the air (2009–2014). From Gansevoort Street (Meatpacking District) to 34th Street (Hudson Yards), the park winds between buildings: wildflowers, art installations, benches with views of the Hudson River and the street canyons. Free, open daily. Best at sunset when the light over the Hudson turns golden.
