Statue of Liberty & 9/11 Memorial
Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty (1886) is the quintessential symbol of America — a gift from France to the USA, 93 meters high (with pedestal), holding the torch of freedom in her right hand. Lady Liberty welcomed over 12 million immigrants arriving by ship to New York and still stands for the American dream today.
- Ferry: Statue Cruises from Battery Park (Manhattan) or Liberty State Park (New Jersey). The ferry stops at Liberty Island (Statue) and Ellis Island (immigration museum — fascinating if your ancestors arrived here). Basic ticket (ferry + pedestal): $24.30.
- Crown: Climbing the crown (354 steps, narrow spiral staircase!) offers the ultimate view — but tickets must be booked months in advance (capacity: only 240 visitors/day). From $24.30.
- Free alternative: The Staten Island Ferry passes right by the statue — free, 25 minutes, and you get the iconic view of Lady Liberty and the skyline. The best free attraction in New York.
9/11 Memorial & Museum
At the site of the Twin Towers (destroyed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, which claimed 2,977 lives) now stand two reflecting pools — the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. The names of all the victims are engraved on the bronze parapets. A place of absolute silence in the loudest city in the world.
- Memorial: The two Reflecting Pools are freely accessible at any time. Impressive, moving, unforgettable.
- Museum: Beneath the memorial lies the 9/11 Museum — original debris, personal items, audio documents, and the history of the day. Deeply emotional and disturbing. Admission: $33. Allow 2–3 hours. Tuesdays from 5 PM: Free Admission (reservation required).
- One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower): The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere (541 meters) stands right next to the memorial. Observation deck: One World Observatory (from $43).
Achtung
The 9/11 Museum is emotionally extremely intense — audio recordings of emergency calls, personal belongings of the victims, and original debris. It is not a place for fleeting visits. Take your time and prepare for it to touch you.
