Best Travel Time & Climate
The Netherlands have a temperate maritime climate — similar to northern Germany, but with a stronger maritime influence. This means: mild winters, cool summers, and the possibility of rain in any season. But also surprisingly charming in every season.
Spring (March – May) — The Best Travel Time ★★★
The absolute highlight: The tulip bloom from mid-April to early May transforms the fields into a sea of colors. The Keukenhof opens its doors, cheese markets start, and King's Day (April 27) is the ultimate party. Temperatures: 8–16°C, increasingly sunny, but always have a raincoat handy.
Summer (June – August) — Pure Joy of Life ★★★
Long days (light until 10 pm!), terrace culture, open-air festivals, beach life in Scheveningen and on Texel. Temperatures: 17–25°C, occasionally up to 30°C. The Dutch flock to the North Sea beaches. Amsterdam is crowded — book hotels in advance. The canals are lively, Vondelpark becomes an open-air living room.
Autumn (September – November) — Culture Time ★★
Museums without queues, golden light over the canals, fewer tourists. Museumplein in Amsterdam is relaxed again. Temperatures: 6–16°C, more rain, but the cultural season (exhibitions, theater) starts. From November, the pre-Christmas season begins with Sinterklaas (December 5/6) — a typical Dutch celebration.
Winter (December – February) — Coziness ★
Cold (0–6°C), often gray and windy, short days. But: Christmas markets, ice skating on frozen canals (rare, but magical!), cozy cafés with warm stroopwafels and hot chocolademelk. Amsterdam in December has the Light Festival — light art on the canals. Affordable hotel prices.
💡 Tipp
The absolute best time for the Netherlands is the last week of April: tulip bloom at its peak, King's Day on April 27, pleasant temperatures, and the longest days ahead. The only downside: hotels in Amsterdam are expensive then — consider Haarlem or Leiden!
