Why the Netherlands?
The Netherlands — or Holland, as many say (although strictly speaking, that's only two of the twelve provinces) — are among the most diverse and surprising travel destinations in Europe. On an area smaller than Lower Saxony, this country packs an incredible density of culture, history, and joie de vivre:
- World-Class Museums — The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Mauritshuis, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen house some of the world's most significant art collections. Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Van Gogh's Sunflowers — all here.
- Amsterdam's Canal Belt (UNESCO) — Over 100 kilometers of canals, 1,500 bridges, and thousands of narrow gabled houses from the Golden Age. No cityscape in the world is as unique and photogenic as the Amsterdam canals.
- Bicycle Nation No. 1 — 23 million bicycles for 17 million inhabitants. The Netherlands is the most bicycle-friendly country in the world with over 35,000 km of bike paths. Everyone rides a bike here — from the king to the retiree.
- Tulip Bloom in Spring — From mid-April to early May, the fields between Leiden and Den Helder transform into a sea of millions of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils. The Keukenhof is the most famous flower park in the world.
- Architectural Avant-Garde — Rotterdam is the architecture capital of Europe: Cube houses, Markthal, Erasmus Bridge. Dutch architects (Rem Koolhaas, MVRDV, UNStudio) shape world architecture.
- Tolerance and Openness — The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage (2001). This tradition of tolerance dates back to the 17th century when Amsterdam was a refuge for the persecuted from all over Europe.
- Culinary Surprises — Forget the clichés: Dutch cuisine offers far more than cheese and herring. Indonesian rijsttafel, Surinamese roti, bitterballen, fresh stroopwafels from the market, and a booming craft beer scene.
- Just a Stone's Throw Away — Amsterdam is only 6 hours by ICE from Frankfurt or 1.5 hours by plane. Perfect for a long weekend or an extended tour.
- Masters of Water Management — A third of the country lies below sea level. The Delta Works in Zeeland are among the modern wonders of engineering. Without dikes and pumps, Amsterdam would be an aquarium.
- King's Day — Europe's Largest Street Party — On April 27, the king's birthday is celebrated. The whole country turns orange: flea markets on every street, boat parades on the canals, live music everywhere. Experience it once!
The Netherlands prove that you don't need a big country to achieve great things. Golden Age, trade empire, artistic revolution, engineering feats — all from a patch of land half submerged in water.
