The Best Omani Souvenirs
Oman offers some of the most unique souvenirs in the Arab world — authentic, high-quality, and often surprisingly affordable. Here are the top keepsakes:
Souvenir Guide
| Souvenir | Price | Where to Buy | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankincense (Luban) | 1–15 OMR/100g | Mutrah Souq, Al Husn Souq (Salalah) | Hojari (white) = Premium. Cheaper in Salalah than Muscat |
| Rose Water | 2–5 OMR/Liter | Jebel Akhdar (directly from farmers), Nizwa Souq | Only buy genuine, undiluted. Check: should smell intense and natural |
| Kumma (embroidered cap) | 2–20 OMR | Mutrah Souq, Nizwa Souq | Hand-embroidered (20+ OMR) vs. machine-made (2 OMR). Genuine handwork can be identified by the reverse side |
| Khanjar (dagger) | 5–500 OMR | Mutrah Souq | Decorative from 5 OMR. Genuine silverwork from 50 OMR. Carry-on: FORBIDDEN! |
| Halwa (sweet treat) | 1–5 OMR/tin | Halwa shops in Muscat and Nizwa | Fresh lasts 2–3 weeks. The one with saffron and rose water is the best |
| Dates | 1–8 OMR/kg | Nizwa Souq, Supermarkets | Khalas variety = Premium. Stuffed dates (almond/walnut) as a gift |
| Kahwa Set | 3–30 OMR | Mutrah Souq | Dalla (pot) + Finjal (cups) + Kahwa powder = perfect gift |
| Amouage Perfume | 30–150 OMR | Amouage Store (Muscat), Airport | Oman-exclusive fragrances are only available here. The flagship store has a small museum |
| Silver Jewelry | 5–100 OMR | Mutrah Souq, Nizwa Souq | Bedouin jewelry is unique. Check silver content |
| Mabkhara (incense burner) | 2–20 OMR | Mutrah Souq | Together with frankincense and charcoal: the perfect Oman set |
Shopping Locations
- Mutrah Souq (Muscat): The best souq for souvenirs — frankincense, khanjar, silver, textiles. Haggling expected!
- Nizwa Souq: More authentic for silver and dates. Friday market for special finds
- Al Husn Souq (Salalah): The cheapest frankincense prices in the country. Directly from the producer
- Muscat Duty Free (Airport): Surprisingly good selection of Amouage, frankincense, and dates. Prices fair to cheap
- Lulu Hypermarket: For food souvenirs: dates, halwa, spices, kahwa in supermarket quality at fixed prices (no haggling)
Tipp
Khanjar daggers are NOT allowed in carry-on luggage! In checked baggage, it's no problem. They will be confiscated at security control. Frankincense, rose water, and dates are hassle-free — even in carry-on, as long as the liquid rule (100ml) is observed. Rose water in bottles over 100ml belongs in checked luggage.
