Bocas del Toro

The Archipelago of Bocas del Toro consists of nine larger islands, dozens of small islets, and countless mangrove islands off the Caribbean coast in northwest Panama, near the border with Costa Rica. The main island, Isla Colón, with the bustling town of Bocas Town, is the center of the archipelago — from here, you can reach all other islands by water taxi in minutes.

In recent years, Bocas has evolved from a backpacker secret to the most popular beach destination in Panama without losing its charm. The mix of Caribbean relaxation, a lively international community, excellent surfing, intact coral reefs, and one of Panama's best nightlife scenes makes the archipelago unique. Here, surfers from all over the world mingle with expats who stayed and travelers who originally planned to stay for three days — and then stayed for three weeks.

Plan at least 3–4 days for Bocas del Toro. One day for Bocas Town and Starfish Beach, one day for an island-hopping tour, one day for surfing or snorkeling, and one day for doing absolutely nothing in a hammock over the water.

Isla Colón — The Main Island

Bocas Town is the lively center of the archipelago: colorful wooden houses on stilts, restaurants and bars over the water, dive schools, surf shops, and the famous "Calle 3" (the party mile). The beaches of the main island:

• Starfish Beach (Playa de las Estrellas): The most famous beach in Bocas — shallow, warm water full of orange starfish lying on the sandy bottom. A surreal beautiful sight. Important: Do NOT remove starfish from the water — they die in the air! By water taxi (5 min.) or on foot/bike from Bocas Town (45 min.).
• Bluff Beach: On the other side of the island, a long, wild Pacific-like beach with waves. Popular with surfers (suitable for beginners). By bike or taxi (15 min. from Bocas Town). No infrastructure — bring water and snacks.
• Playa Boca del Drago: At the northern end of the island, a quiet beach with restaurants. From here, boat tours start for snorkeling at the offshore reefs. By colectivo bus from Bocas Town (25 min., 3$).

Isla Bastimentos

The second largest island of the archipelago and a natural paradise:

• Red Frog Beach: One of the most beautiful beaches in Panama — golden sand, turquoise water, rainforest at the back. Named after the tiny red poison dart frogs (Oophaga pumilio) living in the adjacent forest. By water taxi to Bastimentos + 15 min. hike through the forest.
• Wizard Beach (First Beach): Remote, wild beach — the path leads through the jungle (30 min. on foot from Bastimentos Old Bank). Less visited than Red Frog Beach and therefore all the more magical.
• Bastimentos National Park: Protects the coral reefs and rainforest of the island. Entrance: 10$.

Cayos Zapatilla

Two small, uninhabited palm islands in the national park — the ultimate postcard idyll. White sand, crystal-clear water, excellent snorkeling at the offshore reef. Day trip from Bocas Town: from 25$ (boat + national park fee 10$). The epitome of a "deserted Caribbean island".

Surfing

Bocas del Toro has some of the best surf spots in the Caribbean:

• Bluff Beach (Isla Colón): Consistent beach breaks, ideal for beginners and intermediates. Board rental on the beach (10–15$/day).
• Paunch: Reef break on Isla Colón, for experienced surfers. Strong waves, shallow reef — only at high tide!
• Silverbacks: The legendary big-wave spot for experts — meter-high waves on the open sea, only accessible by boat.
• Best surfing time: November–March (biggest waves), but surfable year-round.

Diving & Snorkeling

The archipelago offers excellent underwater worlds with over 50 dive and snorkeling spots:

• Coral Cay: Shallow reef perfect for snorkeling — colorful corals, seahorses, rays.
• Hospital Point: Steep wall dive with nurse sharks, barracudas, and turtles.
• Zapatilla Reefs: The best snorkeling spots in the archipelago — intact coral gardens in crystal-clear water.
• Prices: 2-tank dive from 65$, snorkeling tour from 25$ (including equipment). PADI Open Water Course: from 280$.

Chocolate Tour

One of the highlights of Bocas: Experience the entire production on an organic cocoa farm on the mainland (Green Acres Chocolate Farm or Oreba Chocolate) — from the tree to roasting to the finished chocolate. You make your own chocolate from bean to bar. The tours are led by the indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé community and are an authentic cultural experience. From 25$ for a half-day tour.

Other Activities

• Night tour in the mangrove forest: By kayak or boat through the mangroves — bioluminescence (glowing microorganisms), caimans with reflective eyes, and nocturnal birds. A magical experience. From 25$.
• Dolphin watching: In the Bahía de los Delfines (Dolphin Bay) on Isla Cristóbal, bottlenose dolphins can be seen almost daily. By boat tour from 15$.
• Yoga & Wellness: Several studios and retreat centers on the islands. Drop-in classes from 10$.

Accommodation

Bocas offers perhaps the most unique accommodations in Panama:

• Overwater Cabañas: The trademark of Bocas — wooden huts on stilts over the Caribbean Sea, with a hammock, private dock, and water as the floor. From rustic (30–50$/night) to luxurious (150–350$/night). The most beautiful: Aqua Lounge (party hostel with trampoline and pool in the sea), Palmar Tent Lodge (safari tents over the water), Azul Paradise (boutique lodge).
• Hostels: Bocas has excellent hostels — Selina Bocas del Toro (pool, coworking), Hostel Heike (family-like, affordable), Bambuda Lodge on Isla Carenero (legendary jungle atmosphere). Dorms from 12–18$.
• Isla Carenero: Only 2 minutes by water taxi from Bocas Town — quieter, more natural, and cheaper than the main island.

Dining

Bocas reflects its multicultural population — Afro-Caribbean, Panamanian, international:

• Caribbean cuisine: Rice and beans in coconut milk, Rondon (fish stew), fresh lobster (5–15$ depending on the season). Most authentic in the small restaurants of Old Bank on Bastimentos.
• Seafood: Freshly caught fish, shrimp, and octopus — best at Restaurante Bibi's (Bocas Town) or on the beach in Bastimentos.
• International: Bocas has surprisingly good food from around the world — Italian pizza at Alberto's, Thai curry, Israeli hummus bowls, and of course, smoothie bars on every corner.
• Budget tip: The market in Bocas Town offers fruit, bread, and basics. The Comida corriente restaurants off the main street offer menus for 4–6$.

Nightlife

Bocas has the best island nightlife in Panama. "Calle 3" in Bocas Town is the party mile — bars and clubs over the water, reggaeton, and dancehall until the early hours. The big party nights are Wednesday and Saturday. Aqua Lounge (water trampoline, diving tower into the sea) and Filthy Friday at Toro Loco are legendary. Drinks: 2–5$ for cocktails — significantly cheaper than Panama City.
