Discover Bocas del Toro
The Archipelago of Bocas del Toro consists of nine larger islands, dozens of small islets, and countless mangrove islands off the Caribbean coast in northwest Panama, near the border with Costa Rica. The main island, Isla Colón, with the bustling town of Bocas Town, is the center of the archipelago — from here, you can reach all other islands by water taxi in minutes.
In recent years, Bocas has evolved from a backpacker secret to the most popular beach destination in Panama without losing its charm. The mix of Caribbean relaxation, a lively international community, excellent surfing, intact coral reefs, and one of Panama's best nightlife scenes makes the archipelago unique. Here, surfers from all over the world mingle with expats who stayed and travelers who originally planned to stay for three days — and then stayed for three weeks.
Plan at least 3–4 days for Bocas del Toro. One day for Bocas Town and Starfish Beach, one day for an island-hopping tour, one day for surfing or snorkeling, and one day for doing absolutely nothing in a hammock over the water.
Getting There
You can reach Bocas del Toro in two ways:
- Flight: Air Panama flies from Panama City (Albrook Airport) to Bocas Town in about 1 hour (80–150$). Spectacular approach over the islands. The fastest and most convenient option.
- Bus + Ferry: Long-distance bus from Panama City to Almirante (about 10h, 20–25$), then water taxi/ferry to Bocas Town (30 min., 6$). Cheaper but time-consuming. Alternatively: Bus to David (6h), transfer to Almirante (4h). From Costa Rica: Bus from Puerto Viejo to Almirante via the Sixaola border.
On-site: Everything operates via water taxis. Between the islands, rides cost 1–7$. In Bocas Town itself, you walk or rent a bicycle (5$/day).
